Learning never stops at AISC

We strive to foster an environment of learning that goes beyond the walls of a physical classroom. AISC’s learners are supported by teachers who lead them through instruction that is intentionally differentiated, personalized, inquiry-based, and constantly reflected upon. Our students learn through a coherent system of shared language, purpose, and understanding, and thrive on opportunities to expand their knowledge anywhere, anytime.

...To My School

Where We Began

In 1994, a group of parents from the international business and diplomatic communities in Madras—as Chennai was then known—discussed starting an after-school program for their children—an idea that would grow to become the American International School Madras (AIM). AISC has grown through a remarkable 25-year journey—from a small schoolhouse to the world-class institution we are today.

Our classrooms foster a love of learning

AISC’s spaces are specially designed for learners of all ages. We have multiple maker spaces for all age groups: The Discovery Studio, to create & innovate, the Design Technology Lab with robotics, CAD stations, 3D printers, laser cutters, to design & build, and many more flexible and open learning spaces.

We are an eco-responsible school

We have a huge diversity of programs, systems, and teams that devote their energies to the actualization of this vision. We have been awarded Platinum status by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), making us the first K-12 school in the world to achieve this status using the real-time ARC platform. Sustainability is taught at a practical level to all our learners. Our service projects, student-led club initiatives, Earth Week workshops, and more give our students the opportunity to engage with our sustainability measures.

Energy

We currently have over 958 solar panels around campus that provide up to 23% of our daily power. We have motion sensor lights that turn off automatically to reduce energy use. We have replaced 70% of traditional Lights with LED lights. They last longer and reduce power consumption.

Water

We use world class techniques to reduce the consumption of water. We have a catchment that captures the rainfall, and use it for toilet flushes and to water the grass and plants on campus. We also use a chemical free, German-engineered water treatment process to avoid corrosion and soften water.

Waste

Single use plastics have been nearly entirely eliminated from the AISC campus. We have discontinued the use of plastic straws and cutlery and moved to biodegradable or reusable.

Transportation

AISC staff are housed relatively close to the school to reduce driving time and thereby decrease pollution. In 2021-2022, 27 students use AISC buses to commute to school. Quite a few AISC staff use carpooling.

Human Experience

We at AISC, are committed to provide better human experience inside the campus. We have CO2 sensors installed in the Gym, Fitness Center, BBT, Cafeteria and Theater to monitor air quality. All the chemicals used within the campus, for cleaning, are eco-friendly.

Living in Chennai

Chennai is where heritage and old-world charm meets progress and modernity. Life in Chennai is more laid-back than the fast pace of some of India’s other metros. Traffic moves quicker, the air quality is better than most cities, and the city has much to offer in terms of entertainment, relaxation, and food.

Chennai offers a wide range of cultural experiences. From live music and theater, take advantage of our rich literary and musical traditions with year-long opportunities to engage with the city. Travel from Chennai is inexpensive and convenient, whether one is seeking culture, cuisine, adventure trekking, or pure relaxation.
