Welcome to AISC English as an Additional Language Program
As a multi-cultural institution with a large swath of linguistic diversity, many students arrive at the American International School Chennai with limited English language proficiency. Based on the latest research in English language acquisition and a rigorous academic program, AISC’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program focuses on providing developmentally appropriate resources that assists students in their English language development (ELD). Aligned to AISC’s commitment to international-mindedness, the EAL Program supports the growth of all students’ knowledge, understanding, sensitivity, and appreciation of various cultures, values, and traditions.
Before enrolling at AISC, students with limited English proficiency take the WIDA MODEL (Measure of Developing English Language) assessment. This assessment helps with a student’s initial classroom placement as well as identifies the level of English language support needed.
Once enrolled, the EAL Program provides a rich academic language environment for English language learners (ELL). An ELL’s ELD is rooted in a variety of content area standards as well as the California ELD Standards. Language development is monitored throughout each year with a variety of academic data points, including: classroom observations, e-portfolios, formative and summative assessments, and standardized tests.
In order to give our ELLs with beginning to lower intermediate proficiency a greater chance of success at AISC, we offers two unique EAL programs: JumpStart and English as a World Language/English for Academic Purposes (EWL/EAP).
JumpStart is a 2-week intensive EAL program, in July, that gives students new to AISC a greater chance of success while transitioning to an English medium school. This program exposes students to foundational English through various interactive activities in order to explore new ideas, be creative, build confidence, and make new friends.
EWL for grades 3-5 and EAP for grades 6-10 are stand alone courses designed to support English language development while ELLs learn grade level appropriate content in English. These independent curricula focus on learning strategies for listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as grammar and pronunciation.
As we celebrate AISC’s linguistic tapestry, English is its medium for academic instruction and assessment in all subjects outside of Spanish and French. The EAL Program strongly supports the Academic Language Development (ALD) of every AISC student. ALD focuses on the specific vocabulary & structures needed for students to be successful. It varies in complexity & sophistication as a student’s knowledge expands. As students continue to meet the rigorous demands of the AISC curriculum, it is important for students and parents to maintain home language skills by communicating in their home language as much as possible. For decades, research has proven that the stronger a student knows his/her home language, the easier it is for the student to learn English.
We look forward to working with you and your student! If you have any questions regarding AISC’s EAL Program, please feel free to contact me at email@example.com.
