Maker Carnival Chennai - 2018

Maker Carnival Chennai is a free to attend, community run event, which will be held on Saturday March 10th, 2018 on the AISC Campus at Taramani. Maker Carnival Chennai takes the form of a “Show, Tell, and Do” experience where inventors/makers sourced through an open call, will have an opportunity to showcase their creations in a fairground atmosphere, and invite the participants to have a go too. It is a family friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students and commercial exhibitors. They are of all ages and backgrounds, coming from all over Chennai and beyond. Maker Carnival’s mission is to entertain, inform, and connect the makers of Chennai, while inspiring the next generation of India’s makers and inventors.

Are You a Maker ?

Makers of the Carnival

If you are a community (non-company) maker, or a school maker group, we would be very happy for you to promote your crafts and maker processes to our audience. School groups should focus on the students presenting their own work or crafts, not the publicising or advertisement of the school.

Makers must focus on the “Show, Tell, and Do” aspect of the day. The booths must allow for a small creative experience, or hands on demonstration of the crafting process. Please get in touch with us to discuss your craft and maker activities, and we can work together to expose your work to a fantastic audience.

Please contact vgeetha@aischennai.org or msherriden@aischennai.org for details about both the event, and the community/school booths we have available.

Think about how people would access your craft.

FAQ

1Maker Carnival Chennai sounds like the best thing i have ever heard of! what exactly is this amazingly innovative event?
Maker Carnival Chennai is a family friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. This year is our first, and we are based in the beautiful setting of the AISC campus in Taramani.
2Is Maker Carnival Chennai on everyday? Please let it be every day! I want one now!
Hmmm well aren’t you eager, I’m afraid it happens but once a year. We open at 10am and will go to 4pm on Saturday 10th March, 2018. Drop in whenever you like, but please register first (link to reg page)
3I will pay whatever it takes for me attend, do you accept american express?
No, it is free. Just come along. Maker Carnival Chennai is a non-profit event. All the organisers and makers volunteer to make the day happen with the kind support of our sponsors and partners.
4I build cool stuff, can I show it off at Maker Carnival Chennai? Is there a secret handshake or something?
Not a handshake but an open call. Anyone can submit their project when the call opens. Once it closes, the committee calls the elders to an elaborate secret banquet and decisions are made to what the public gets to see in March. We are open to pretty much anything, so be creative. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, authors, and commercial exhibitors. They are of all ages and backgrounds, coming from all over Chennai and beyond. The open call for the 2018 event will start early in 2018
5I plan to bring my Model-T Ford, where can I park?
There is street parking around parts of the AISC Campus, but as you might imagine it is quite limited. We are expecting quite a crowd, so don’t expect to be able to park nearby. Maybe best of all try public transport or app based driver services.
6My Model-T Ford is in for repairs, is there public transportation available?
You can come to our school by Local train, Taramani is the railway station stop for the school or you can catch a bus from Koyambedu. ( 70M, 570)
7My Model-T Ford has only 2 wheels and I pedal it. Where do I park?
Bike racks are available outside the AISC campus, please remember to secure it with a good quality lock.
8Can I volunteer at the Maker Carnival Chennai?
You bet you can! We love our volunteers. Please contact vgeetha@aischennai.org or msherriden@aischennai.org for details about volunteering roles and options.
9Can you not just record it and then transfer the experience into my brain?
We will be shooting some video and photography of the event. So you might get your picture taken if you turn up. The technology for what you want does not exist. Yet.
10What if it rains?
The show will go on! Bring rain gear to keep you dry when walking outdoors. Fortunately, we have marquees/covers over the outdoor booths and vendors, and a team with uncrushable spirit.
11What can I expect?
To have a fantastic time! You’ll be surprised and intrigued with every corner that you turn. Expect to rummage, chat, fiddle, twiddle and create. Expect to come away with new merchandise, experiences and ideas. Most of all, expect to see the amazing maker community that Chennai holds, and take with you new connections and friends.
